The bear is a large, powerfully built mammal noted for its great strength, big appetite, and lumbering gait. Bears have stocky bodies covered in various shades of thick, shaggy fur. There are eight living species of bear worldwide, including polar bears, grizzly bears, and giant pandas. Bears are generally omnivorous, feeding on plants, insects, fish, and small mammals. They have an excellent sense of smell and sharp claws for catching prey. During cold winters, some bears will hibernate in dens, living off stored fat. Mother bears are quite protective of their cubs. Though usually solitary animals, bears will gather together to feed at salmon spawning streams. Bears can stand on two legs and perform actions like waving and catching. Their great size and ferocious reputation make them symbols of the wilderness, even though attacks on humans are rare. Today, habitat loss threatens many bears with extinction. But if protected, these intelligent creatures will continue to thrive in forests and wild lands.
