The banana is a long, curved, yellow fruit with a thick outer peel and soft, sweet interior flesh. Bananas grow in hanging clusters on tall tropical trees that belong to the Musa genus. They are cultivated in warm regions worldwide and are valued as an important food crop.

Underneath the hard green or yellow outer peel are long inner chambers that run the length of the banana. The peel can be easily removed to reveal the soft, white or yellow flesh inside which has a mild sweet taste and creamy texture. When raw, bananas have a firm, starchy consistency that softens and sweetens as they ripen. The flesh is high in nutrients like potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C.

Bananas come in a range of sizes from small miniature Cavendish bananas to the large plantain varieties. They start off green and turn a bright yellow as they ripen. A few dark brown or black spots on the peel indicates optimal ripeness and sweetness. Bananas are curved into their signature crescent shape which fits perfectly in the human hand. This portable fruit can be eaten raw or used in various dishes and desserts. With their kid-friendly flavor and shape, bananas are both a healthy snack and fun food.
