Chibi is a style of Japanese anime and manga characterized by characters with oversized heads and small bodies. The word “chibi” means small or short in Japanese.

Chibi style exaggerates the childlike features of characters with large eyes, tiny noses and mouths, and stubby limbs. Proportions are distorted with big heads and feet on compact bodies. Designs often feature cute expressions with large shining eyes and sweet smiling faces that express youth and innocence.

This technique is used to make characters appear young, as children or babies. It is also used to personify animals, objects or concepts in a cute childish way. For example, even adult characters can be portrayed in chibi form to show their kawaii or lovable side.

Chibi style is often comic, poking fun at normal conventions of cuteness and beauty. While exaggerated and deformed, chibi successfully captures the charm of childhood in the simplified elegant lines and bright colors of its minimalist approach to form. Its distinctive look makes it one of the most easily recognizable anime styles.
